Abstract: Like other developing coastal and island nations around the world, Belize and Fiji both continue to struggle with not only the challenges of adaptation to climate change but also the growing issues affecting the sustainability of their marine resources. Both countries are highly vulnerable to climate change impacts, primarily on rural and coastal livelihoods, agriculture, fisheries and tourism. As we continue to experience the impact of increasing temperatures and sea level rise around the world, it is also difficult to ignore the other human impacts on the marine ecosystem that when combined with the impacts of climate change and sea-level rise will undermine food, health and livelihood security in these countries. It was long believed that the vast oceans were infinitely able to provide for our needs and accommodate our waste. However, decades of neglect and overexploitation are pushing marine ecosystems to their limit. This research aimed to compare the nature and effectiveness of marine conservation initiatives in two countries, Belize and Fiji, from two different tropical regions through examining how their policy and management practices have aided in fisheries restoration and climate change adaptation in their respective marine protected areas. It is also aimed at identifying how the effectiveness of the conservation practices and management efforts have impacted the livelihoods and food security of the people within the communities around the marine reserves
