Abstract: This study aims to examine the factors that contribute towards student retention and pay special attention to the students’ socio-cultural factors that affect their decision on persistence. This study involved a mixed method approach using qualitative and quantitative approaches. The study involved first year students from Fiji (both i-Taukei and Indo-Fijian), Kiribati and Vanuatu students at The University of the South Pacific (USP) Laucala Campus.
