Abstract: Laucala Bay is a coastal lagoon which is located south east of Viti Levu, Fiji. It is enclosed by barrier reefs which restricts movement of pollutants. Hence, becomes a crucial lagoon to constantly monitor. Heavy metals are one such pollutant and their distribution in Laucala Bay was investigated from the point of view of assessing the significance of wastewater effluent discharged from Kinoya Wastewater Treatment Plant (KWWTP) into Laucala Bay as a major source. In addition to discharge from KWWTP there could be riverine inputs of heavy metals into Laucala Bay which could be of anthropogenic and terrigenous origins. The surface sediment samples were obtained from twenty sampling sites in Laucala Bay and were analysed for total organic carbon (TOC), total Kjeldhal nitrogen (TKN), exchangeable ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, total phosphates, soluble phosphates and total heavy metals (cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn)) in the <63 μm sized sieved samples. The samples were also analysed for heavy metal content in each fraction extracted following the Standards, Measurements and Testing Programme’s (SM&T) fractionation technique.
