Abstract: Poverty and hardship are evidently on the increase in Pacific small island states. In the case of Kiribati, poverty and hardships are impacting on the sustainability of rural communities. This thesis seeks to explore and understand how rural development policies and strategies are designed and implemented, and how they have impacted and influenced rural youth livelihoods and the sustainability of rural communities in Kiribati. Rural youth livelihood resources and strategies are also identified and their accessibility and sustainability analysed. It also explores strategies for effective rural development policy interventions on rural youth livelihoods and to ensure the sustainability of rural communities.
