Abstract: Tropical cyclones (TCs) occurring in the Southwest Pacific region cause devastation as they make landfall on small island nations in the region. The physics of TCs has progressed rapidly with the satellite era and early aircraft reconnaissance. Dynamical and statistical models for TCs have also progressed with the availability of high processing capable computers. Two main areas of TC research are; TC track prediction and TC intensity prediction. Substantial progress has been made in reducing errors for both TC track and intensity forecasts. However, the forecast of rapid intensification of TCs still needs to be improved.
