Abstract: Research in Internet-based manufacturing applications is rapidly growing as a means to allow geographically dispersed manufacturing units to collaborate on product design and development. This notion has potentials in timely production of cost-effective and quality products demanded by customers. This research explores Internet protocols and technologies with an eye to identify, implement and evaluate means of remotely controlling a computer numerically controlled (CNC) drilling machine. The Internet is chosen as a communication platform because it is relatively cheap and has a very wide coverage. The CNC drilling machine symbolizes a machining process which can be replaced by other genre of CNC machines just by changing machine-specific implementations in the proposed architecture. Preliminary investigations using off-the-shelve software to remotely control the PC connected to the drilling machine revealed severe limitations on the part of such software for the desired application. These limitations led to identification of functional requirements for remotely controlling the CNC drilling machine. The requirements were encapsulated in a framework which was developed to provide platform independent and cost effective means of remotely controlling the CNC drilling machine securely via the Internet. In addition, an infrastructure to allow remote manufacturers to collaborate on a product design as well to monitor the drilling process in real time is presented. The web-based manufacturing system allows multiple, possibly concurrent users to submit drilling parameters using a Java applet interface. Using Common Gateway Interface (CGI) these parameters are scheduled for execution on the server as job files. The job files containing parts program are executed by the drilling machine controller on the CNC drilling machine. The job management system as part of the overall web-based manufacturing system enables remote users to seamlessly manage their jobs. Security policies were formulated and implemented using the latest technologies such as Transport Layer Security (TLS), firewall and web server authentication modules. The synergy of the security mechanisms deployed proved effective in giving the remote control framework a sound security foundation to promote safe usage of the CNC drilling machine.
