Abstract: Diospyros (Family Ebenaceae) is a tropical genus of trees of great economic importance because of the ebony heartwood, produced by several of its species. Overharvesting and habitat destruction are threatening the persistence of some of these ebony heartwood producing Diospyros species. In the Solomon Islands ebony heartwood of Diospyros is profoundly important in the local woodcarving industry .Despite this economic importance, little is known about its’ conservation status. We used an interdisciplinary approach on Vangunu Island, Western Solomon Islands to assess the conservation status of ebony heartwood Diospyros species (rihe). This was achieved by 1) identifying the ebony heartwood producing species, 2) investigating existing ethnobotanical knowledge, 3) assessing the population structure of ebony heartwood producing species, and 4) determining the overall distribution of Diospyros in the wider Solomon Islands.
