Abstract: The D-region of the ionosphere continues to be the most difficult to probe and thus still remains a least understood region of the upper atmosphere. Analysis of very low frequency (VLF) propagation measurements is the most cost effective technique for investigating the propagation characteristics of sub-ionsopheric VLF waves in the Earth-ionosphere waveguide and can be used to determine the electron density of the D-region under normal and disturbed conditions. A Software based Phase and Amplitude Logger named SoftPAL, designed by LF-EM Research Ltd, Dunedin, NZ, was primarily used for this thesis work.
