Abstract: This study examines the effectiveness of a community mapping toolkit as a participatory geographic information system (PGIS) approach. In this context, effectiveness is determined by accessibility of the QuantumGIS (QGIS) software, capability of communities to use the toolkit to visualise their resources and areas at risk and the contribution of the toolkit in creating new knowledge. The study was carried out in three villages in Fiji: Serua Island, Vuniniudrovu and Tonia.
