Abstract: The thesis attempts to understand this in four ways. Firstly, it provides an appreciation of the key concepts of ageing in the context of theories, social policy and the Welfare State as well as the global, regional and national demographics on ageing. Secondly, it provides a historical description of the factors that led to policy or programmatic interventions to address the Aged in Fiji. The third component highlights the Post-Independence progressive interventions to assist the Aged. Finally, the thesis discusses the opportunities and strengths of established mechanisms and sustainable approaches to address the Aged in Fiji.
