Abstract: Metagenomic analyses, involving random shotgun DNA sequencing and bioinformatics tools, were applied to study the diversity and variation of marine microbial communities in Fiji waters. This thesis describes the core microbiomes identified at two locations (Suva mainland and Beqa Island) for three habitats: mangrove, coral reef and open ocean in the Fiji islands, and measured over a period of five years. These microbiomes have been compared with those identified in similar habitats from Brazil, China and India. Microbial profiling of Fiji waters identified specific microbial signatures characteristic of both the types habitats surveyed and of human influence.
