Abstract: Mycobacterium bovis occurs in a wide range of animals, especially farm animals of economic importance. It is emerging as one of the most important diseases that infect cattle. It also poses public health problem when transmitted to humans by either inhaling infected aerosols or ingesting M. bovis through contaminated meat and milk products. In the current study, a PCR method was standardised to use for the detection of bovine tuberculosis in Fiji. No previous work has addressed detection of M. bovis using PCR in Fiji, so various steps of optimisation were involved, in which a positive control was mandatory. Therefore, a positive control was first obtained from the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) that isolates M. bovis bacteria in the veterinary lab using organs showing lesions during post mortem surveillance.
