This is a major issue for critical civil infrastructure, especially those underground. This phenomenon is particularly important for Pacific Island Counties (PICs) since major concrete structures in these countries are in close proximity of the sea or coastline. Consequently, a study was conducted to investigate the corrosion of the concrete rebars due to chlorides in the presence of different cations. This approach was taken to understand chloride attacks in the presence of different cations, somewhat simulating the highly complex mixture of groundwater. Also, the study was focussed on early stage corrosion in order to understand the dynamics of different anions and cations.
